Visit Gigrin Farm Red Kite Feeding Centre
A Must-See Wildlife Experience in Mid Wales
If you’re looking for something a little bit special to do while staying in Mid Wales, a visit to Gigrin Farm is one we often recommend to our guests.
Just outside Rhayader, this well-known red kite feeding centre offers a rare chance to see these incredible birds up close in their natural environment. It’s not a staged show or a controlled display. Everything you see here is completely real, completely wild, and genuinely memorable.
Gigrin Farm is one of the best places in Mid Wales to see red kites in the wild.
A Unique Red Kite Feeding Experience
Every day, food is put out once only, and the birds arrive in their hundreds.
Around 250 to 300 red kites in summer
Up to 450 to 500 in winter, when food is harder to find
Feeding times:
2pm (GMT)
3pm (BST)
Because the birds are wild, no two visits are ever quite the same. You might see them circling overhead, swooping down, or gathering in the surrounding trees before feeding begins.
One of the most remarkable things about Gigrin Farm is the chance, if you’re lucky, to spot a Leucistic (white) red kite. These birds are incredibly rare, with only a handful known worldwide, and seeing one really does feel special.
Why It Feels So Different
Unlike a falconry centre, there are:
No trained birds
No scheduled fly-bys
No guarantees
And that’s exactly what makes it feel so authentic.
You’re watching wildlife as it should be. Natural, unpredictable, and a little bit wild.
Plan Your Visit

Booking Is Strongly Recommended
One of the most important things to know before visiting is that numbers are limited each day.
This is done to:
Avoid overcrowding
Protect the experience
Keep things calm for both visitors and birds
During school holidays and busy periods, the farm can reach capacity and turn visitors away, so booking ahead is the safest option.
As a small, family-run business, occasional changes to opening times can happen. The online booking system is always kept up to date, so it’s the best place to check before travelling.
Facilities at Gigrin Farm
The site is well set up for a relaxed visit, with:
Parking on site
Toilets, including disabled facilities
Wheelchair access to most areas
Picnic areas
A gift shop
A small coffee shop serving drinks, cakes, crisps and ice creams
Way-marked farm walks
Dogs are welcome, and there’s a friendly, laid-back feel to the whole place.
Staying Nearby at Coety Bach
If you’re planning a visit, Coety Bach makes a lovely base for exploring this part of Mid Wales.
We’re around 30 minutes from Gigrin Farm Red Kite Feeding Centre, so it’s an easy afternoon trip before heading back to the cabin for a quiet evening. Quite a few of our guests combine a day out watching the kites with a soak in the wood-fired hot tub afterwards, especially in the cooler months when the birds are at their most active.
While you won’t see them in the same numbers as you do at the farm, red kites are a regular sight at the cabin too. We don’t feed them here, but you’ll often spot them naturally overhead, gliding across the valley.
You can see them from just about any of the outdoor spaces, whether you’re sat in the hot tub, by the fire pit, or out on the porch with a morning coffee. It’s a quieter, more unexpected kind of wildlife moment, and one that guests often comment on.
