Bog Snorkelling: A Day of Mud and Madness!

If you’ve never heard of bog snorkelling in Wales, you’re in for a treat. Or a shock. Or possibly both.

Fun family days out in Mid Wales. Bog snorkling

Every August Bank Holiday, the small town of Llanwrtyd Wells (just over half an hour from Coety Bach) hosts the gloriously bonkers World Bog Snorkelling Championships. It’s exactly what it sounds like: grown adults in fancy dress and snorkels flinging themselves into a water-filled peat bog and swimming two lengths with flippers, a snorkel and no front crawl allowed. Just good old-fashioned frog kicking and a lot of determination.

It’s not your usual countryside stroll.

A Proper Day Out in Mid Wales

This is one of those quirky Welsh events you won’t forget in a hurry. The atmosphere’s buzzing, the costumes are brilliant (think pink tutus, Batman, the odd Viking), and the sheer silliness of it all has you belly laughing before the first splash. There are food stalls, music, a bar, and plenty of mud for everyone, even the spectators.

weird days out UK. Unique and fun day out. Wales events. Bog snorkling.

It’s a proper fun day out in Powys.

And the best bit? When you've had your fill of mud, mayhem and possibly bog-scented burgers, you can head back to Coety Bach cabin for a hot shower, a cuppa, and a soak in our sparklingly clean, bog-free hot tub. We promise. No goggles needed.

Close Enough for the Action, Far Enough for the Peace

Llanwrtyd Wells bog snorkelling is just a scenic drive from the cabin, around 35 minutes through the hills and hedgerows of Mid Wales. So you can enjoy all the action-packed adventure without needing to camp out or book a hotel that smells faintly of pond weed.

Back here at Coety Bach, it’s all about switching off. You’ll swap bog water for bird song, flippers for fluffy robes, and the crowd for your own private view over the Ithon Valley. Just you, the hills, and maybe a glass of something fizzy in hand.

It’s the perfect way to round off a weekend break in Wales or a romantic rural getaway with a bit of a twist.

Worth a Watch (Or a Wriggle)

If you’re the adventurous sort (or just fancy a muddy medal for your efforts), you can even enter the competition yourself. There’s a junior race, a fancy dress prize, and a real sense of community silliness about it all. Just be warned, it’s cold, it’s squelchy, and it’s absolutely brilliant.

Or just go along and cheer. No wetsuit required.
