Can You See the Northern Lights from Coety Bach?

You Absolutely Can!

We often get asked whether you can see the Northern Lights from the cabin, and the answer is yes. Sometimes, if the skies are clear and there’s a bit of solar activity about, you really can get an amazing display. You don’t need to go trekking up a dark hillside or driving for miles either.

Where to see aurora in Wales uk. Cwm Elan

Coety Bach is already sat in an elevated position, looking out over the Ithon Valley, so you’ve got a fantastic view straight out to the north. That’s the direction you need to be looking for the aurora, and from the cabin garden, hot tub or even the stargazing bench just outside the gate, you're in a prime spot.

We're also just up the road from Cwm Elan (Elan Valley), which is an official International Dark Sky Park. It’s one of the best areas in the UK for stargazing and astrophotography as light pollution is kept to an absolute minimum. But here’s the bonus, because the skies over the cabin are so clear, you don’t even need to go that far to get the experience.

You can watch the stars from the hot tub, or sit wrapped in a blanket with a cuppa on the bench, waiting to see if that gentle glow appears in the sky and if it doesn’t, you’ve still got one of the best night skies in Wales.

You Don’t Have to Sit Out All Night Freezing

One of the loveliest things about seeing the Northern Lights in Wales here is that you’re not stuck out on a windswept mountain. You can dip in and out. Get cosy inside, pop back out to check the sky, then warm up again by the log burner.

There’s no pressure to make a mission of it. We even provide binoculars so you can take a closer look at whatever’s dancing about up there.

A Few Aurora Facts

  • The aurora happens when particles from the sun hit the atmosphere and make the sky light up in different colours, green, pink, even violet

  • We've been seeing more Northern Lights in the UK lately because the sun is reaching the peak of its solar cycle, sending stronger bursts of energy towards Earth. These solar storms have been powerful enough to push the aurora further south than usual, making places like Mid Wales perfect for a rare, spectacular view

  • “Aurora” comes from the Roman goddess of the dawn, which makes sense, as it always feels like a gentle rising of light
